We have seen a lot of books being adapted for the big screen over the years and, while some of these books have gone on to become some of the biggest movie franchises in Hollywood, there are others that have been less successful. When it was announced that The Mortal Instruments books were being adapted for the big screen, there was a lot of excitement surrounding the project.
The Mortal Instruments books are a great read packed full of excitement and would be perfect for the big screen. Or so we thought. Unfortunately, due to mis-casting, an average script and not the best of directing, The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was very disappointing, and was also considered a bit of a flop at the box office, only managing to gross $80m worldwide from a $60m budget.
It was expected that once The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones was released, it would not be long before production on The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes would begin, but that has not been the case. Despite the fact that Lily Collins and James Campbell Bower are both happy to return, with Sigourney Weaver joining the cast, there is still no news on when production will begin on the movie.
Add to that the fact that The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones director Harald Zwart refused to return to direct The Mortal Instruments: City of Ashes, with no director still attached, and it seems that it could be some time before we see the movie hit the big screen, if it even happens at all.
